The massive hype surrounding blockbuster video game releases is once again sparking anxiety within the corporate sector, as The Wall Street Journal reports that many full-time employees are hoarding their paid time off. Workers are planning to use their accumulated leave when Grand Theft Auto VI, commonly known as GTA VI, officially launches on November 19, 2026. This trend has created an unofficial holiday phenomenon, leaving management across various organizations increasingly concerned about a significant drop in workplace productivity during the launch window.
Bud Burrus, a software engineer and father of three, shared with WSJ that he has mapped out a plan to take five full days of vacation specifically to dive into GTA VI. He noted that he has already aligned expectations with his family, letting them know there will be days when "dad is very busy," while assuring them he will not marathon the game for 20 straight hours and neglect his parental duties, though he intends to be fully immersed during the initial release phase.
Similarly, medical sales representative Anna Rey told WSJ that since the game's release date has been pushed back multiple times, she intends to take a full week off as long as the November 19 launch date holds firm. For context, GTA VI has faced two previous delays, moving from its original late 2025 window to May 26, 2026, before settling on the current November 19, 2026 date.
Taking time off for major entertainment releases highlights how modern media culture directly intersects with corporate human resource management. The unprecedented 13-year gap since the previous installment has created massive consumer demand, meaning HR departments worldwide may need to proactively address clustered leave requests ahead of late 2026.

Regarding pre-order demand, market intelligence firm Sensor Tower estimates that global pre-orders for GTA VI reached roughly 4.77 million units as of August 28, 2026. Out of that total, approximately 90 percent of buyers opted for the Ultimate Edition priced at 99.99 US dollars, while about 77 percent of the pre-orders were placed for the PlayStation 5 console. However, these figures are entirely external market estimates and do not represent official sales data announced by Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive, as no official figures have been released yet.
The intense anticipation is driven by the monumental success of GTA V combined with the massive 13-year hiatus between the two titles. While the exact economic impact on workplace productivity remains difficult to measure precisely, a survey conducted by gaming website Win.gg—polling 2,000 working adult gamers in the United States—revealed that 49 percent of respondents feel their work performance suffers the day after a late-night gaming session, translating to an average loss of about two hours of productivity per day.

This phenomenon is hardly unprecedented. Back in 2015, when Fallout 4 launched after a five-year gap from its predecessor, gamers frequently joked about calling in sick on release day. Nevertheless, the cultural buzz and widespread anticipation surrounding GTA VI dwarf the footprint of Fallout 4 by multiple folds.
