Perplexity has officially released pplx, a single-binary Command Line Interface (CLI) tool engineered to integrate its Search API directly inside the terminal for coding agents. This utility aims to streamline how developers fetch web data and page content straight from their command-line environments.
The tool exposes precisely two core working surfaces: pplx search web, which executes a live web search, and pplx content fetch, which pulls a specified URL and returns cleaned page text ready for processing.
Releasing a dedicated CLI for a search API highlights Perplexity's strategic focus on the developer ecosystem, particularly those building AI coding agents. By bypassing complex API wrappers for quick terminal queries, developers can drastically accelerate their local workflow and prototyping phases.

Installation requires just a single shell command piping an installation script directly into sh. The installation script downloads manifest.json from the latest release to extract the correct tag and version, pinning all subsequent downloads to that exact tag to prevent race conditions during concurrent publishes. It then fetches SHA256SUMS and the appropriate platform binary, verifies the checksum, and installs the executable to ~/.local/bin/pplx without needing sudo access. A receipt is subsequently written to ~/.config/pplx/pplx-receipt.json only after the binary executes successfully.
Platform coverage is currently restricted to three specific targets:
- macOS on Apple Silicon
- Linux x86_64
- Linux arm64
Any other environment will trigger an exit with an error, as there are currently no builds available for Windows or Intel-based macOS systems.
When handling output data, the tool handles previews and storage with specific safeguards. For instance, --stdout-preview acts as a no-op unless a designated save directory is provided, truncating results only when saved via --output-dir or $PPLX_OUTPUT_DIR. When invoked alone, it returns full-sized outputs where individual hits can span multiple kilobytes.
