Farage senior aide filmed suggesting way to avoid donations law

A senior aide to Nigel Farage was captured on undercover footage suggesting methods to circumvent electoral laws in order to secure a foreign donation of £500,000 for Reform UK, as broadcast in an investigation by Channel 4.

Dan Jukes was recorded meeting an undercover reporter posing as the UK-based son of a wealthy American businessman. Under UK electoral law, permissible donors must be registered voters or companies within the United Kingdom, meaning the son qualified while his American father did not.

The undercover operation was conducted by Verbatim Investigations, founded by journalists from the Centre for Climate Reporting. Channel 4 News verified the materials prior to broadcasting. In response, Reform UK denied any wrongdoing and alleged they were the target of a hoax orchestrated by foreign-funded climate change activists.

During the recording outside a pub in Westminster, Jukes was filmed telling the reporter posing as the son that the donation could be made under the son's name even if the funds originated from his American father. Jukes further indicated that similar mechanisms had been utilized on previous occasions.

Channel 4 subsequently aired footage from a lunch meeting in Clacton, Essex, featuring Jukes, the undercover reporter, an actor playing the American father, and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who was recorded thanking both supposed donors.

Reform UK has initiated an internal investigation concerning Jukes and another staff member involved in commissioning undisclosed polling worth £32,500. An Electoral Commission spokesperson noted that political parties must report permissible donations over £11,180, and any attempts to evade these controls are matters for police consideration.
