London City beat Man Utd 2-1 in WSL opener

London City Lionesses proved they could live up to the pre-season hype by delivering an impressive performance in the Women's Super League season opener, securing a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in front of a packed crowd of 5,402 home fans at Hayes Lane.

Eder Maestre's side demonstrated that they are much more than just a collection of individual superstars, showing remarkable cohesion and tactical clarity that allowed them to dominate the first half and put the visitors under immense pressure.

The match featured several notable appearances, most notably two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas making her debut and anchoring the midfield. US owner Michele Kang was also in attendance, wearing a match shirt with her name on the back and posing for photographs with supporters prior to kickoff.

In contrast, Manchester United struggled to find their rhythm during a difficult first half where they failed to register a single shot. Although they improved after the break and eventually scored through substitute Simi Awujo in the ninth minute of stoppage time, it was too late to salvage a result.
