Hundreds of user conversations with Anthropic's popular artificial intelligence chatbot Claude were discovered to be accessible to anyone using Google or other web browsers. Links to these chats would appear when search engine users employed specific, site-targeted search terms.
The public availability occurred after users decided to share a link to their chat, which was subsequently saved and indexed by search engines like Google. The issue spanned more than 200 conversations across at least 25 pages of search results, with some discussions taking place only weeks prior to their discovery.
Users prompted the chatbot with a wide array of topics. One April conversation involved drafting an unpublished blog post containing corporate cloud security project details. Another interaction from the previous month featured a user asking how to transform into a Nine-tailed fox, prompting Claude to generate an image claiming they had fox powers. Other logs contained resumes with names and contact details, alongside proprietary healthcare research transcripts.
This incident highlights a recurring privacy hurdle for generative AI platforms, where sharing links for collaboration or viewing can inadvertently lead to web indexing if search engine crawlers discover them. Similar indexing issues affected OpenAI's ChatGPT and X's Grok chatbot previously, illustrating that clearer user warnings regarding search engine archiving on shared links remain a critical industry challenge.
An Anthropic spokeswoman stated that users maintain control over whether to share their conversations, noting that the links are not guessable unless individuals choose to distribute them themselves. While Claude's share option warns that anyone with the link may view the contents, it does not explicitly state that the URL might end up in search results.
A Google spokesperson clarified to the BBC that the tech giant does not control which pages are made public, emphasizing that website owners are provided with clear controls to manage crawling and indexing, which Google strictly respects. Search indexing for the chat logs has since been removed.
