Born in Carmarthen, Wales, in 1878, Bate developed a deep fascination with wildlife and nature from an early age. As a young woman, she moved with her family to rural Gloucestershire, spending countless hours exploring the surrounding countryside and caves to collect fossils independently.

With very little formal education, she largely taught herself before asking for behind-the-scenes work at the Natural History Museum in London in 1900. Her sheer determination impressed museum staff, securing her an assistant position that marked the beginning of a partnership lasting over half a century. By 1901, she published her first scientific paper detailing a bone cave in the Wye Valley.

Bate subsequently undertook numerous expeditions across the Mediterranean, frequently traveling alone to remote caves in search of ancient life evidence. Her travels led to the discovery of a previously unknown dwarf elephant species in Cyprus and, in 1909, the extinct goat-like antelope known as Myotragus in the Balearic Islands. Despite spending most of her career without a permanent paid position, she achieved more than 80 published scientific works.
