Liverpool are moving swiftly to appoint a new sporting director following Richard Hughes' departure to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. This change marks the club's fifth appointment in the role since 2022, with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) president Mike Gordon personally overseeing the recruitment process to find a candidate committed to a long-term project.
Potential candidates under consideration include both internal and external figures. David Woodfine, formerly Hughes' assistant and loans director, and Julian Ward, sporting director from 2022 to 2023 who is now FSG's technical director, are among the names. Pedro Marques, FSG's director of football development, is also in consideration. Meanwhile, Luis Campos of Paris St-Germain is viewed as a strong external option though unlikely to leave the European champions immediately.

Whoever succeeds Hughes will face a substantial to-do list, particularly regarding crucial contract decisions for senior squad members. Goalkeeper Alisson, whose deal expires at the end of the season, attracted interest from Juventus over the summer, but the club had no intention of letting him leave. Similarly, club captain Virgil van Dijk is out of contract next summer.
Losing both Alisson and Van Dijk in the same close season would carry significant risk, especially following the departures of experienced figures like Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson at the end of the previous campaign, leaving the club in need of leadership stability.
This transitional phase in the management structure highlights the delicate balance FSG must maintain between squad renewal and retaining core leadership. Finding a sporting director capable of navigating these expiring contracts while preserving team competitiveness is vital for the club's trajectory.
In midfield, the situation surrounding Alexis Mac Allister, whose contract runs until 2028 with no active renewal talks currently underway, will also fall to Hughes' successor to address. Conversely, the forward department appears well-stocked following previous recruitments and the expected long-term deal for 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha.
