The U.S. government is doubling down on revived nuclear energy to fuel the technology sector's booming power demands. NextEra Energy, the owner of the Duane Arnold nuclear power plant in Iowa, has secured a massive $1.9 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy to finance the extensive refurbishment needed to bring the dormant facility back online.
The Duane Arnold plant ceased operations in 2020 after an intense rainstorm damaged the site. Rather than funding repairs, NextEra chose to mothball the facility at a time when cheap natural gas flooded the market and rendered nuclear power economically unviable. However, the explosive rise of artificial intelligence and broader economic electrification over the past six years have completely transformed the energy landscape.
With data center electricity demand projected to nearly triple by 2035, utilities are scrambling for reliable energy sources. Shuttered nuclear reactors have quickly become tech companies' preferred solution for clean, firm baseload power. Microsoft previously struck a deal with Constellation Energy to restart a Three Mile Island reactor, while Meta has aligned with the Clinton Clean Energy Center to offset emissions from its massive infrastructure.

During the refurbishment process, NextEra aims to squeeze an additional 14 megawatts out of the Duane Arnold facility, bringing its total capacity to 615 megawatts. NextEra CEO John Ketchum noted in a previous earnings call that 50 megawatts will be reserved for the local power cooperative, covering 18% of Iowa's demand growth since ChatGPT launched in 2021.
The tech industry's pivot toward resurrected nuclear plants highlights the operational limits of intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar. Because AI data centers require uninterrupted round-the-clock power, carbon-free nuclear baseload energy has become invaluable. However, restarting decommissioned nuclear assets involves immense capital expenditure, regulatory hurdles, and multi-year engineering challenges before yielding tangible power output.
According to a report by UtilityDive, these three revitalized power plants represent the lowest-hanging fruit in the United States. Only one or two potential candidates remain, such as San Onofre in California, which has been shuttered longer and would demand significantly more engineering work to bring back online.
