Following a dramatic first season finale that left prosecutor Jang Gun-young framed and imprisoned while his rival Baek Ki-tae seized ultimate power, Season 2 jumps nine years forward to explore a massive turning point in both characters' lives.
Director Woo Min-ho explained that a nine-year gap was chosen because it is an ideal timeframe to completely upend people's lives. This return brings intense clashes between returning favorites and brand-new characters entering a ruthless political landscape.
In this season, Baek Ki-tae, portrayed by Hyun Bin, ascends to the position of Deputy Director of the Korea Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA), expanding his dark network into international arms trafficking. However, amidst shifting state dynamics, his iron grip begins to slip away.
Hyun Bin noted that viewers will witness a completely new side of his character, including rare emotional outbursts as situations spiral out of his control.
