There are no AirPods with cameras yet and I hope it stays

Apple September events are always packed with exciting product announcements, and this year was no exception. The company introduced its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, active noise cancellation on entry-level AirPods 5, and Siri Recap features for the Watch Series 12 and Watch Ultra 4. However, the rumored AirPods Pro equipped with cameras were notably absent, reportedly delayed until 2027 according to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, a development met with relief by critics.

Major concerns persist regarding tech companies integrating cameras into everyday wearable devices like earbuds. Small LED lights on smart glasses or earbuds fail to reassure people who are being recorded, and certain Meta smart glasses users have demonstrated methods to conceal recording intentions. While public recording in the US is legally permitted, it remains unsettling and allows individuals to wear recording devices into sensitive situations unnoticed.

Rumors suggest that potential AirPods cameras would feature low resolution and serve strictly to feed Visual Intelligence and Siri AI rather than capture standard photos or videos, assisting with navigation directions or recognizing objects and text. Despite lower resolution, the device continuously gathers surrounding environmental data, presenting a privacy invasion that remains difficult to accept.
