The gaming industry witnessed a major shift as Xbox announced it will publish Physint, the upcoming action game from Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, following PlayStation's decision to drop and cancel the project.
This unexpected switch came through a flurry of announcements involving PlayStation, Xbox, Kojima Productions, and Kojima himself. Sony, which previously published both Death Stranding titles from the studio, framed the split as a difficult decision to step away from collaborating, while insisting their relationship remains strong.

Kojima was much more blunt on his personal X account, revealing that Sony gave the studio an unexpected cancellation notice in June and that the team spent the past three months tirelessly searching for a new publishing partner. He praised Xbox as a partner sharing a common vision for the future, aided by the fact that they are already collaborating on the horror title OD.
"Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life" "We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint . His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox."
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma expressed her honor in a statement, noting that securing a title of Physint's stature reflects her memo to staff this summer promising a focus on strongest franchises and biggest new ideas.
The move of Physint highlights Microsoft's aggressive strategy to secure top-tier creator partnerships for the Xbox ecosystem. By offering creative freedom and broad support, Xbox is positioning itself as a reliable sanctuary for auteur-driven developers who might face commercial or strategic roadblocks elsewhere in the industry.
Beyond video games, the announcement noted that the partnership between the two companies will extend into film and television projects, though specific details remain under wraps. Kojima Productions previously outlined multi-media expansion plans in 2021, which currently include a Death Stranding animated spinoff called Mosquito and a live-action adaptation.
Kojima describes Physint as a genre-defining action-espionage title, raising hopes that it will serve as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear, though it is not slated for launch until at least 2030. Meanwhile, OD is expected to arrive sooner, having been announced back in 2022.
