Google introduced a brand-new password manager switching experience on Android on Thursday, removing the cumbersome requirement to download and import CSV files when migrating data to a different application. The update aims to streamline how users transition between competing credential management services.
Under the new system, users simply open their incoming password manager application and select the option to import or copy credentials from their previous manager. The Android operating system will automatically detect compatible manager apps installed on the device and coordinate the direct data transfer. Users can then review the incoming information and approve the migration with just a few taps.

Historically, migrating passwords via CSV files posed notable security risks because unencrypted plaintext files could easily be mishandled or intercepted if stored improperly on a device. By engineering a secure, direct application-to-application transfer protocol built into the operating system, Google significantly mitigates data exposure risks while properly handling modern authentication standards like passkeys.
Because the new migration method fully supports passkey transfers, users will no longer need to manually set up their passkeys from scratch when switching to a new password manager app. Furthermore, the company emphasized that this direct pipeline entirely averts the inherent security risks of exposing sensitive credentials through unencrypted CSV exports.
Google confirmed that the new migration feature is already rolling out across select partners as well as its own native password manager app. Major third-party services including Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane are supported at launch, with additional applications expected to integrate the feature in the near future.
The streamlined password manager switching capability will be rolled out to all mobile devices running Android 8 or higher.
