At least 16 elderly residents have tragically lost their lives following a severe fire at a nursing home in Chile. Authorities confirmed the disaster struck the El Edén facility, situated approximately 640 kilometers or 400 miles south of the capital city, Santiago.
According to reports, the fire ignited on Friday evening at around 22:30 local time, which corresponds to 01:30 GMT. Firefighting crews battled the flames through the night until the fire was finally extinguished by Saturday morning, allowing ten other individuals to be successfully evacuated.
Throughout Saturday, emergency responders remained at the location to clear debris and remove collapsed corrugated metal roofing. Police officers cordoned off the surrounding area to ensure public safety while investigations into the origin of the fire got underway.
