However, the celebration carried a clear statement that broke away from traditional protocols. Kerr deliberately draped his custom-designed Brooks running spikes over his shoulder in a way that obscured the official Nike sponsor logo on his Great Britain kit, ensuring that photographs and video coverage highlighted his personal commercial backer instead of his national federation.

Following his triumph at the new biennial event organized by World Athletics, Kerr explained the motivation behind his deliberate action during an interview with BBC Sport, emphasizing the need for regulatory changes regarding athlete sponsorships.
"There is one last thing that I think we can get right, which is allowing the athletes to represent their own brands versus their country."
