Microsoft has initiated the rollout of an emergency out-of-band update designed to resolve issues stemming from its record-breaking September patch Tuesday release. The software giant patched nearly 1,000 vulnerabilities in its largest software update ever this month, but the massive deployment inadvertently introduced bugs that negatively impacted businesses, software developers, and gamers alike.
The flaws introduced by the September update specifically disrupted folder shares on Hyper-V-based Linux virtual machines, Remote Desktop Services sessions, and select USB audio devices. The emergency update, which was released yesterday, addresses these persistent bugs across Windows 11 versions 26h1, 25H2, and 24H2. Furthermore, Microsoft has distributed updates for Windows Server 2025 and 2022, LTSC editions of Windows 10, alongside Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
The rising frequency of out-of-band emergency updates from Microsoft highlights the immense complexity of maintaining a modern operating system like Windows 11 across diverse hardware ecosystems. Pushing security fixes for nearly a thousand flaws in a single cycle significantly elevates the risk of unintended regressions, emphasizing the ongoing challenge software engineers face in balancing rapid security patching with core system stability.
Historically, issuing out-of-band patches for Windows was considered an extraordinary measure, but it has transformed into a much more frequent occurrence throughout this year. Back in January, the corporation was forced to deploy four separate out-of-band updates following a faulty Windows 11 patch. Subsequently, in March, another two emergency fixes were required due to installation failures and Microsoft account sign-in errors, followed by a July patch addressing an Intel driver issue that triggered performance drops and excessive battery drain.
