The most significant alteration is the doubling of the standard qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain from five years to ten years for most immigration routes, while positions below degree level face a baseline of fifteen years.
The Home Office projects that roughly 1.6 million individuals would seek settlement between 2026 and 2030 under existing policies, prompting ministers to introduce measures to slow down this wave driven by immigration spikes between 2022 and 2024. However, these adjustments are not yet law. As of autumn 2026, the five-year pathway remains active, and no official statement of changes has been presented to Parliament.
