Bangkok Council Rejects 6B Baht EV Garbage Truck Rental

At the Irawat Pattana Building, Bangkok City Hall 2 in Din Daeng district, Ms. Pattraporn Kengrungruengchai, President of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council, chaired the first extraordinary meeting session 1 of 2026. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, executive administrators, department heads, city council members, and relevant officials attended the session held on September 15, 2026.
The primary agenda of the meeting involved reviewing budget amendment items for the fiscal year 2027. The ad hoc committee reserved its opinion for the council to deliberate on three electric waste collection vehicle rental projects aimed at replacing conventional combustion garbage trucks whose contracts are set to expire in 2027, totaling 1,347 vehicles.

However, following extensive discussion among council members, the majority concluded that the project details and supporting data remained incomplete and insufficient for approving such a substantial budget. Consequently, the electric garbage truck rental project worth over 6 billion baht was voted down.
The rejection of the EV garbage truck project highlights the city council's stringent oversight of long-term budget commitments. While transitioning to electric vehicles remains a key environmental priority for the Bangkok administration, comprehensive transparency and economic justification continue to be critical deciding factors for the council.
As a result of this decision, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration must adjust its operations by extending the current diesel-powered garbage collection contracts with the existing provider to ensure continuous waste management services across the capital without disruption.
