Meta lets AI agents handle WhatsApp Business setup

Meta has announced a major update allowing users to let their chosen AI agents handle the setup and management of WhatsApp Business, the service that connects companies with customers via chat. The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, alongside news regarding new AI-focused subscription plans.
As Meta explains, this onboarding workflow was previously quite cumbersome, requiring developers to jump between multiple tools and services including the Developer Console, Meta Business Manager, API references, and code editors. Now, developers can simply chat with their preferred AI agent, describe what needs to be done, and let the AI handle the configuration.
This capability is made possible by the new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that directly connects AI coding agents such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, and ChatGPT to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Model Context Protocol (MCP) represents a vital shift in modern software development, enabling AI assistants to securely interact with external tools and APIs. Meta expanding its MCP ecosystem to include WhatsApp Business highlights a broader industry trend toward automating tedious configuration tasks and streamlining developer onboarding workflows.
This move expands Meta's existing lineup of MCP servers, which previously focused on ad management, app configuration monitoring, and social technologies, into a dedicated onboarding tool for businesses. Numerous other tech giants also offer MCP servers, including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft.
Businesses will also be able to leverage AI agents for a variety of additional tasks:
- Describing messaging templates they want the AI to generate
- Editing and refining existing message templates
- Testing messages and webhooks
- Monitoring background items that could previously fail unnoticed, such as Terms of Service, payment methods, and Business Verification

During the setup and configuration process, Meta noted that its other server, the Meta Social Technologies MCP, can also be utilized to discover API endpoints, search documentation, and assist with troubleshooting errors.
