Apple might make servers again to cash in on AI rush

After retiring its Xserve line back in 2011, Apple largely stepped away from enterprise server hardware and left the market to other manufacturers. However, the surging demand for raw compute power driven by the rapid expansion of the artificial intelligence industry has convinced the company that there is a lucrative opening for its powerful yet efficient ARM-based M-series processors. Devices like the Mac Mini and Mac Studio have already proven exceptionally popular with AI developers, leading to notable product shortages.

Whether it revives the Xserve branding or adopts a new moniker, Apple's enterprise server hardware is not expected to debut until 2029. Industry reports indicate that the upcoming machines will run on either two or four M8 Ultra chips depending on the specific configuration. Given that Apple only recently announced the M6 chip in August, the M8 processor family is still quite a ways off from hitting the market.

Rumors also suggest that Apple's enterprise servers could incorporate Nvidia's NVLink Fusion technology, which bridges multiple processors together so they can operate seamlessly as a single unified system. Although the two tech giants have historically maintained a somewhat frosty relationship behind closed doors, Apple recently turned to Nvidia hardware to power its overhauled Siri servers. Integrating NVLink could pave the way for deeper collaboration between the two companies, though plans remain fluid and subject to change.
