  • Google AI Overviews appeared in 43% of US searches measured by Similarweb
  • Visits to Google AI Mode web experience rose to 279 million in May 2026

Google’s AI-generated summaries appeared in 43% of US searches measured by Similarweb, marking a significant increase from 15% a year earlier, according to the market intelligence firm’s 2026 Generative AI Landscape report.

AI Overviews display generated summaries within traditional Google search results, while AI Mode offers a conversational interface for complex questions and follow-up prompts. Users can seamlessly transition from an AI Overview into AI Mode while preserving their original search context.

Google explained that AI Mode relies on a technique known as query fan-out, which breaks down a single user question into related subtopics and executes multiple searches simultaneously. The platform then synthesizes information from those searches to generate a comprehensive response backed by supporting links.

Similarweb estimated that traffic to Google’s AI Mode web platform climbed from 126 million visits in June 2025 to 279 million visits in May 2026. Separately, Google reported in May that AI Mode had crossed one billion monthly active users, though this figure measures individual users rather than raw web sessions and is not directly comparable to Similarweb's metrics.

This rapid expansion of conversational and AI-driven search features highlights a fundamental shift in how users interact with search engines. Moving away from fragmented keywords toward descriptive, natural-language prompts places new demands on search infrastructure and transforms how publishers must think about visibility and referral traffic.

The report also noted that broader generative AI websites secured an average of 9.5 billion monthly visits between June 2025 and May 2026, representing a 70% jump compared to the previous year. Monthly unique visitors grew by 57% to 655 million, and mobile application downloads climbed 58% to reach 4.4 billion.

"People are now adopting a new, more natural way to search and discover."
