Backend engineers are moving into AI engineering by building and publishing their own Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.

Spain's AEMET open weather API served as a clean, copyright-free sandbox for learning MCP mechanics.

Key engineering hurdles included a unique two-step data retrieval pattern and ISO-8859-1 character encoding issues.

The ultimate goal is to build an autonomous incident-investigation agent for Kubernetes diagnostics.

As a backend engineer accustomed to Java, Spring, and Kubernetes, transitioning toward AI engineering meant wanting to actually ship something in the agent ecosystem rather than just reading about it. This led to building and publishing a small Model Context Protocol (MCP) server as the first installment in a planned series of progressively harder projects. The goal was to close the full loop by building, publishing to npm, listing in the official MCP registry, and achieving discoverability.

The chosen subject was AEMET, Spain's national weather agency, which offers a free public API with straightforward authentication via an API key and no legal gray areas. It provided a clean sandbox to learn the mechanics. What was unexpected, however, was that this straightforward API harbored the two most interesting engineering lessons of the entire exercise.

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that enables AI clients such as Claude Desktop or IDE agents to interact with external tools through a uniform interface, eliminating the need for custom integrations for every individual platform.

The server exposed a few specific typed tools:

get_municipality_forecast for fetching forecasts by municipality using INE codes

get_station_observation for observation data from meteorological stations

get_weather_warnings for active regional weather warnings

The tech stack utilized Node.js and TypeScript, the official @modelcontextprotocol/sdk, stdio transport, and Zod for input validation.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

The standout feature was AEMET's two-step OpenData pattern. The initial request does not return weather data directly; instead, it returns a pointer. The JSON response contains a datos field pointing to a URL such as https://opendata.aemet.es/opendata/sh/abc123 containing zero temperature data. Developers must then execute a second request to that specific URL without an API key to retrieve the actual payload. This mirrors AWS S3 presigned URLs or a manual HTTP 302 redirect embedded inside a JSON body rather than a Location header.

2API request hops required

200HTTP status that can mask inner JSON errors

Architecturally, isolating both hops behind a single client function prevents tools from needing to know the underlying pattern. Furthermore, undocumented pitfalls included discrepancies where transport-level HTTP responses returned 200 OK while the JSON body reported "estado": 404 or 401. Another significant hurdle was character encoding: AEMET serves content in ISO-8859-1 (latin1) rather than UTF-8. A naive await response.json() call mangles Spanish accents like Cádiz into Cdiz, requiring developers to read bodies as buffers and decode them explicitly.

Regarding distribution, npm publishing failures typically stem from missing a bin field in package.json pointing to compiled code or omitting the shebang line#!/usr/bin/env node at the entry file. Additionally, stdio transport strictly prohibits writing anything other than JSON-RPC messages to stdout, as stray console.log statements corrupt the message stream and silently break the server, requiring logs to be directed to stderr instead.

Source: Dev.to

This article builds upon part 6—where our system could already detect issues like occasional test failures or locator problems—and part 7, which covered safety guardrails, combining them to create a new skill named Bug-Reporter.

Previously, Claude's skills usually ended just with a notification that something went wrong. This article bridges that gap by creating a skill that transforms the failure Claude just discovered into a production-ready bug report, featuring reproduction steps referenced from evidence rather than guesswork.

Stock photo for illustration purposes only, not from the actual event.

Before writing the code for this skill, it is necessary to define the data fields that a good bug report should have, which will become the skill's output template: title, reproduction steps, expected results, actual results, evidence, and environment. At the same time, the guardrails rules from part 7 are immediately applied, since fabricated bug reports would cause significant damage and waste time for the development team.

Using AI to help report bugs automatically carries the risk of "hallucination," where the AI might try to fill in missing information gaps to make the report look complete. This article's emphasis on guardrails—prohibiting steps that were not actually performed and preventing automatic submission to bug-tracking tools—serves as a safe practice that helps maintain the credibility of the software development process.

The ironclad guardrails rules in this system include:

Prohibiting any reproduction steps that were not actually performed and observed firsthand during that session.

If evidence for any field is missing, such as no logs or screenshots, explicitly stating that it is missing rather than leaving it blank or guessing.

Prohibiting automatic ticket submission to tracking systems; reports must always be presented to users for confirmation to prevent duplicate tickets.

As a working example, when testing a checkout page where an issue is found where the "Place Order" button can be clicked immediately before the cart total finishes updating, the playwright-flaky-test-debugger system from part 6 runs first to collect trace evidence. Then, the playwright-bug-reporter generates a report in the specified format, noting that the button remains clickable during recalculation and featuring trace evidence showing the element has an aria-busy="true" value at timestamp 00:04.211.

"Checkout — "Place Order" clickable before cart total finishes updating"
Example bug report title from the article

The template created here is designed to be neutral and unbound to any specific bug-tracking system, allowing teams to apply it to Jira, GitHub Issues, or other tools as needed. By closing the loop from issue discovery to value generation, the toolsets from parts 6 and 8 work together seamlessly across detection, diagnosis, and verifiable report writing.

Source: Dev.to

SearchValues<T> introduced in .NET 8 stores a set of constants for searching and the runtime selects the fastest strategy.</t>

Benchmark results for dense delimiters show almost no difference from the traditional IndexOfAny, but sparse matches are about 1.7 times faster.

Creating SearchValues inside a method per call is nearly 3 times slower than storing it in a static readonly.

Many often view the new tool
SearchValues<T>
added in .NET 8 as a cheat code that makes string scanning up to five times faster, tempting an immediate refactoring of existing code. But for developers maintaining log management systems that primarily rely on
IndexOfAny
, performance testing before diving in is the first priority.

From comparative testing in cases where the log buffer has a frequency delimiter densely packed every 60 characters, the results are quite surprising as there is very little difference between the traditional method and the new tool:

9.7 msSearchValues<char>

10.2 msIndexOfAny(char[])

19.4 msmanual char loop

The reason for this is that the
IndexOfAny
method on modern .NET with small character sets is already well-vectorized. On the other hand, writing a manual check loop the traditional way turns out to be twice as slow as other methods, reflecting that the real performance bottleneck usually comes from the custom loops we write ourselves rather than the standard API.

However, the situation changes when modifying the data pattern to have rarer delimiters, averaging once every 40 kilobytes, which is a simulation case for anomaly scanning. The test results clearly show a difference:

IndexOfAny(char[]): Takes 5.6 milliseconds (found 723 matches)

SearchValues<char>: Takes 3.3 milliseconds (found 723 matches)

In cases where the target hit rate is relatively low,
SearchValues
can perform at its full potential in sweeping across long spans of data with nothing in them using wider vectorized steps.

The concept behind
SearchValues<T>
is to shift the precomputation burden upfront so the runtime doesn't have to recalculate every time a search is performed. Understanding underlying architectural workings like vectorization allows developers to choose APIs that fit the data characteristics, whether dense or sparse patterns, significantly impacting overall application performance.

Another crucial point developers must be extremely careful about is the cost of object creation. If
SearchValues
is newly created inside a method every time it is called instead of being stored in a
static readonly
variable, test results with a million short lines of data paint a clear picture:

Static SearchValues: Takes 25.1 milliseconds

SearchValues per call: Takes 70.2 milliseconds

Creating a new object per single call drops performance by nearly three times, making it even slower than not using it at all. If not declared as a static variable, we are essentially writing code that slows down the system unnecessarily.

Illustration from stock photo library, not an actual photo from the event

Source: Dev.to

After spending his initial time learning about AI video APIs and building the system, he finally managed to close his first customer within a span of just three months.

As for the underlying technology chosen for development, the project owner decided to use Next.js API routes due to his familiarity with JavaScript and a desire to avoid the hassle of learning a new deployment system. The system's main features are divided into image-to-video, where users can upload an image along with a prompt to generate a short clip, and scene description text-to-video, eliminating the need for cameras or editing software.

Illustration image from stock photo library, not from actual events

$4.99Revenue from the first Starter package customer

3Duration in months before securing the first customer

Froging AI's internal system automatically routes requests to multiple providers based on the readiness and cost of each model, such as using open-source models like Wan-2.1 via Replicate for low-cost experimentation, up to utilizing Minimax and 海螺AI for high-quality results. Instead of his original plan to build an all-in-one suite of AI creative tools—including image generation, video creation, and editing tools—he decided to trim it down to just the video function. This allowed him to release the product to market much faster rather than waiting for the entire vision to be perfect, which would have taken a much longer coding time.

Source: Dev.to

DeepDoc is a single-binary document text extraction tool supporting 13 formats, built with Rust.

It operates 100% offline with zero cloud data uploads, no JVM required, and no ML model downloads.

It accurately converts docx, pptx, xlsx, pdf, and other document families into Markdown.

It focuses on preserving heading paths and data chunking optimized for RAG systems.

Building a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) system or document search feature often starts with the same old problem: converting docx, pdf, and pptx files into clean text, all under a strict constraint common in many organizations where documents must never leave the local machine.

Reviewing existing tools in the market reveals various distinct limitations:

Apache Tika: A traditional standard that works well, but runs on the JVM, introducing memory management overhead and larger container image sizes.

Python Stacks (e.g., Unstructured, Docling, MarkItDown): Popular in RAG tutorials, but require pip installation, download ML models, and run slowly for standard digital file processing.

Cloud Parsers (e.g., LlamaParse): Convenient for getting started, but require uploading private data to external servers and charge per page, which fails to meet the needs of organizations like banks, hospitals, or law firms operating in air-gapped environments.

DeepDoc's approach was specifically developed to solve this problem by offering a single static Rust binary with no JVM, no Python, no model downloads, and zero network connections, delivering deterministic results every time the same dataset is inputted.

Modern RAG systems frequently struggle with the complexity of installing massive libraries and managing data security. Tools developed in Rust are emerging as an appealing choice for developers seeking speed, high performance, and complete control over data security directly on local machines.

In version v0.1, it supports the conversion of 13 born-digital document formats, including
docx
,
pptx
,
xlsx
,
odt
,
ods
,
odp
,
epub
,
html
,
rtf
,
csv
,
md
,
txt
, and text-based
pdf
, with CLI commands available to instantly scan folders recursively.

Stock illustration, not from an actual event

Regarding RAG implementation, standard chunking typically splits text by character count and causes a loss of context, but DeepDoc analyzes the document structure first and then splits it along block boundaries while retaining the heading path and byte range for each segment.

However, the developer clearly notes that DeepDoc v0.1 is not yet an OCR tool for parsing scanned image-based PDFs. If pure image files are encountered, the system will immediately return error code 4 to prevent garbage data from entering the RAG index, with OCR features planned as an optional add-on in the future.

Source: Dev.to

Deploying LLM features via merged PRs and casual reviews leaves systems without proper controls.

The APRF (AI Production Readiness Framework) is not a 0-100 scoring system, but a strict pass/fail gate.

Version v0.10 comes with 8 domains, 27 pillars, and 40 criteria for the Core Profile.

Supports CI integration via YAML files and automated policy checks.

Bringing AI or Large Language Model features into production is often treated just like releasing a regular web page—simply merging a Pull Request, watching a demo, and celebrating. In reality, system failures do not stem from the model not being smart enough, but from production systems lacking sufficiently strict controls for real-world usage.

Existing standards like NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, or SOC 2 may be useful and necessary for risk assessment and system management, but they still fall short for engineers operating systems on the front lines. The real critical question is whether this AI application can run safely in production.

From the perspective of modern software development, treating AI like traditional software is dangerous due to the high non-determinism of model behavior. Frameworks like APRF bridge this gap by enforcing hard gates within the CI/CD pipeline, rather than relying on subjective assessments or averaged criteria that are often overlooked.

This is the origin of the AI Production Readiness Framework (APRF), created by StackRail as a vendor-neutral draft standard. This framework is not a certification standard, not an alliance network, and not a readiness score from 0 to 100 to put in an executive board report. Instead, it is a methodology featuring strict blocking criteria.

Stock photo illustration, not from an actual event

The working principle of APRF does not use average scores to gloss over flaws. Capability scores are determined by the lowest value across all pillars (weakest pillar wins), and if any mandatory check fails, the system immediately blocks the release. Version v0.10 includes the following structural details:

8 core domains: Security, Safety, Data, Model Lifecycle, Agents, Reliability, Cost, and Governance.

27 pillars controlling specific points within each domain.

40 Core Profile criteria for Tier-2 customer-facing AI systems.

61 Regulated Profile criteria for special control or Tier-3 systems.

For practical implementation this week, developers can restrict agent tools and integrate policies via YAML files—such as defining boundaries for high-risk functions like
update_crm_contact
,
refund_order
, or
shell_exec
to always require an approval process—as well as combining this with GitHub Actions to immediately fail the release if it does not pass the checks of APRF version 0.10.0.

Source: Dev.to
