However, if every single pin on the map pulses continuously, it turns into visual noise where nothing stands out. This post explores building a tracked objective pin in PixiJS 8 using particle effects from NixieFX with a strict attention budget, pulsing three times upon opening the map, skipping beats while off-screen, and then stopping completely.

This demonstration runs on pixi.js 8.22.0 and nixie-fx 0.1.20, stepped on a fixed 1/60 second clock. The effect is a single one-shot pulse featuring two emitters: a soft glow that grows and fades over 0.7 seconds, and a ring of 14 sparks moving outward over roughly 0.8 seconds. It does not loop on its own, allowing game code to dictate when to fire it again so all stop conditions stay in one centralized place.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

30Total pins on map

9Pins visible on 640x400 canvas

8sDuration per test run

The demo map features 30 pins across an 1100 by 720 map viewed through a 640 by 400 canvas, meaning 9 pins are on screen at a time. Each run lasts 8 seconds, with real WebGL draw calls counted by wrapping drawArrays and drawElements. Every scenario executed three times, yielding identical draw counts consistently across all runs.

Implementing an attention budget for in-game visual effects is a crucial practice in modern game development to prevent cognitive overload and visual fatigue for players. Restricting pulse animations to a limited count and pausing them when off-screen helps conserve GPU processing resources while maintaining a clean and intuitive user interface.

The effect utilizes strictly color over life, size over life, velocity, and drag, marking the export as fully supported for pixi2d. Builders looking to create more complex pulses should verify support via support.backends.pixi2d in manifest.json first, as enabling features like trails, noise, collisions, lights, or sub-emitters downgrades export compatibility to partial status for Pixi.

The effect was authored as JSON and exported via npx nixie-fx export . Alternatively, developers preferring visual tuning can use NixieFX, a visual particle editor for PixiJS that saves in the exact same format. The official PixiJS particle effects guide provides further details on bundle loading and ticker setup used in this demo.

Source: Dev.to

Hiring panels and promotion committees recognize this distinction, which explains why many top-performing employees receive a "not yet" response without clear explanations.

Empirical research supports this observation. A study examining sales workers across 214 US firms conducted by Alan Benson, Danielle Li, and Kelly Shue, published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics in 2019, revealed that top sales performers were most likely to secure promotions, yet their respective teams experienced performance declines after they transitioned into management roles.

systemd.timer replaces traditional cron with better logging and dependency ordering

Supports both wall-clock calendar expressions and monotonic time spans

Includes built-in controls for random delays and execution overlap prevention

Many administrators still rely on traditional crontab files, but systemd provides a first-class alternative: .timer units. A timer unit manages when a job runs, while a matching service unit defines what action to take. This approach gives you the same logging, sandboxing, credentials, and resource controls already used for standard system daemons, alongside calendar expressions that are much easier to test than standard five-field cron strings.

This operational guide is based on systemd.timer(5), systemd.time(7), systemd.service(5), systemd.exec(5), systemctl(1), and stock units on systemd 257, verified on Debian 13 and version 257.13. It can successfully replace most recurring tasks that run every night, every few minutes, or once after system boot, offering improved observability and dependency management.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

When examining timer types, Realtime timers use the OnCalendar= directive to follow the system wall clock and timezone. If the machine goes to sleep while a calendar event elapses, systemd catches up upon resume, triggering the service once even if the expression matched multiple times during sleep.

Moving from cron to systemd.timer solves long-standing frustrations regarding error logging, environment variables, and job sequencing. Integrating scheduled tasks directly into the systemd ecosystem ensures robust lifecycle management for all automated server tasks.

Always validate your expressions before deployment using tools like systemd-analyze calendar. On systems lacking a battery-backed RTC, enabling systemd-time-wait-sync.service ensures that calendar-based timers wait until network time synchronization is established.

Understanding configuration knobs such as AccuracySec= and RandomizedDelaySec= is crucial. While they sound similar, they perform distinct tasks: AccuracySec= defines scheduling precision, while RandomizedDelaySec= introduces random jitter to spread out execution loads across large fleets, as seen in stock configurations like fstrim.timer.

Setting Persistent=true on calendar timers instructs systemd to store the last trigger timestamp on disk. If the host is powered off during a scheduled execution window, the service will run once immediately upon the next timer activation, subject to any configured random delay parameters.

Source: Dev.to

Most MCP connection errors stem from incorrect URLs or missing headers.

Streamable HTTP uses a single URL, replacing the older HTTP+SSE design.

POST requests must explicitly include Accept and Content-Type JSON headers.

Stateful servers require the Mcp-Session-Id header after initialization.

Developing applications with the Model Context Protocol (MCP) often exposes connection hurdles on the server side. A technical guide by Tanod details the most frequent pitfalls encountered when working with the Streamable HTTP protocol, which utilizes a single URL for JSON-RPC payloads and an optional GET stream. Most failures originate from clients communicating with outdated endpoints or supplying improperly formatted header fields.

Under the legacy HTTP+SSE transport specification dated 2004-11-05, clients opened a GET request to an SSE URL to discover a secondary endpoint designated for POST operations. However, the Streamable HTTP specification introduced on 2025-03-26 consolidated both into a unified URL. Clients or connection bridges that continue appending /sse will receive an immediate 404 error from any compliant server, just as appending redundant paths like /mcp causes routing failures.

Transitioning from HTTP+SSE to Streamable HTTP simplifies the architectural footprint of MCP deployments and streamlines connection handling. Nevertheless, updating client implementations to adhere strictly to the new specification is crucial to avoiding failures during this transitional phase.

The standard remedy is utilizing the endpoint URL exactly as published. For stdio-only clients, running a remote bridge such as npx mcp-remote with the --transport http-only flag prevents fallback behaviors to SSE. Tanod's production servers exclusively implement Streamable HTTP, meaning primary endpoints like https://tanod.dev/mcp and focused routes such as https://tanod.dev/mcp/docs are operational, whereas nested suffixes like /mcp/docs/sse return 404 status codes.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

Regarding 406 Not Acceptable responses, these typically occur when POST payloads omit the required Accept: application/json, text/event-stream header. Servers may respond with a single JSON body or an SSE stream, and standard HTTP libraries sending default wildcard accepts will often be rejected. Additionally, requests must explicitly declare Content-Type: application/json to prevent parsing errors caused by form-encoded bodies or plain text scripts.

404Endpoint mismatch error code

90sMaximum server response timeout

Session-related 400 errors emerge in stateful architectures that require an initial initialize request. Successful initialization returns an Mcp-Session-Id header, which the client must append to every subsequent call. Invoking tool listings prior to initialization or dropping the tracking header triggers client error responses. When a server restarts, active sessions expire, yielding a 404 Session not found response that mandates a fresh initialization handshake.

"Most connection failures we see in our own server log are a client talking to a different address than the one it was given, or sending the wrong headers."
Tanod

Source: Dev.to

This episode bridges the gap between EP02's policy of no network-side transcoding and EP04's ABR bitrate degradation logic, explaining how multiple quality layers are produced at the sender and switched by the server without pixel-domain transcoding.

Simulcast is often misunderstood as cropping a single stream on the server. In reality, the sender produces multiple independently decodable encodings at once. For instance, a 1080p input with 3 simulcast layers can yield separate 1080p, 720p, and 360p RTP streams, implemented via multiple encoder instances or a pipeline supporting multi-outputs without rigid standalone requirements.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

Understanding Simulcast mechanics is crucial for modern live streaming architecture, balancing resource distribution between publishers and infrastructure servers. Offloading encoding tasks to the publisher prevents severe bottlenecks at the core server, making it ideal for ultra-low latency live streaming environments.

Compared to traditional server-side transcoding where the server fully decodes incoming streams to raw pictures and re-encodes per target layer, Simulcast shifts this workload to the publisher. The server simply receives a ready picture and performs direct byte forwarding without decoding or re-encoding processes.

"the transcoding work didn't vanish; it moved to the publisher's encoder, trading publisher encode cycles for server transcode cycles."
Greg Tham

When considering why Scalable Video Coding (SVC) isn't used despite its bitrate efficiency, this project centers on H264/HEVC and Simulcast based on targeted browsers and sender/receiver capabilities. This reflects PPCDN's current product compatibility trade-off rather than an absolute industry restriction against SVC.

In the next episode, the course shifts from encoding to defense mechanisms, covering publish/play signing, token mechanisms, and anti-hotlinking strategies.

Source: Dev.to
