Today, elderly women across the globe are sparking a digital phenomenon by transforming into top-tier influencers with millions of followers, sharing daily life experiences, fashion tips, and recipes with audiences young enough to be their grandchildren.

Among them is 96-year-old Lillian Droniak from Connecticut, widely known as Grandma Droniak, who went viral in June after revealing that her retirement home threatened eviction over her frequent parties. Although the facility later confirmed the threat, they reached a settlement allowing her to keep celebrating as long as alcoholic drinks were not supplied.

96Lillian Droniak's age

15MSocial media followers

$12,000Monthly nursing home fees

With an audience of 15 million followers, Droniak has turned her vibrant personality into a lucrative business venture. Prosecutors allege that he deliberately concealed his employment status while holding five separate full-time government roles concurrently during the spring of 2023, drawing full-time salaries from multiple public sector employers at the exact same time.

During court proceedings, the prosecution detailed that Chowdhury was employed by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the UK Health Security Agency, the Food Standards Agency, the Department for Business and Trade, and the Home Office. Throughout this period, his combined contracted hours reached an astonishing 183 hours a week—surpassing the total number of hours existing within a standard seven-day week—and resulting in earnings of £11,000 for a single month of work.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

The court heard that prior to acquiring these positions, the defendant already maintained three other full-time roles, which included positions at the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and an east London NHS Trust. The widespread adoption of work-from-home policies following the Covid-19 pandemic has created structural gaps where employees can potentially exploit flexible arrangements if robust output tracking and cross-departmental verification mechanisms are absent. Public institutions across the UK are now under increased pressure to tighten administrative controls to prevent similar multi-employment frauds.

Source: BBC Business
