A review involving three major trauma centres located in Liverpool, Manchester, and Sheffield revealed that medical staff have treated a total of 477 patients under the age of 16, marking a dramatic increase from fewer than 10 cases recorded back in 2019 up to nearly 150 cases in 2024.

Data from the review indicates that the average age of the injured children stands at 12 years old, with the most vulnerable victim being merely 9 years of age. Alarmingly, almost none of the victims were wearing protective helmets at the time of the incidents. Emergency department physicians are now strongly urging authorities to introduce robust legislation to safeguard children, pointing out that the estimated 1.2 million private e-scooter owners in the UK face no legal age restrictions, speed limits, or safety equipment mandates.

477Under-16 patients treated across 3 trauma centres

12Average age of injured children (youngest: 9)

59Total UK deaths involving e-scooters to date

A significant hazard stems from high-performance private models equipped with turbo settings capable of reaching speeds up to 28mph. This high-speed capability was tragically highlighted when a UK teenager riding one such device crashed into a busy road, killing his 14-year-old friend—one of 59 fatalities linked to e-scooters in the UK so far.

In another tragic incident on March 19, 2025, a passenger named Jacob Calland suffered irreversible brain injuries in Wythenshawe, Manchester, when the e-scooter he was riding on the back of collided with a BMW car. Manchester Crown Court was informed that the teenage driver also sustained severe injuries, including brain bleeding and multiple bone fractures.
<

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

"E-scooters were not harmless toys and could lead to horrific consequences when used by inexperienced riders."
Det Con Steve Pennington, Greater Manchester Police

Authorities noted that the majority of these accidents in Manchester, Liverpool, and Sheffield involved private e-scooters being unlawfully operated on public roads, pavements, or footpaths, despite regulations stating they are strictly restricted to private land with the owner's explicit consent.

Context and Background: The regulatory framework for e-scooters in the UK creates a stark contrast between private devices and legal rental schemes. While rented e-scooters permitted on cycle lanes and roads enforce a top speed of roughly 15mph, require a full or provisional driving license, and mandate a minimum age of 16, private devices operate in an unregulated space that medical experts have famously likened to the "Wild West."

Statistical breakdowns show that half of the injured children were between 10 and 13 years old, with nearly two-thirds being boys. Most injuries occurred from falling off the vehicle rather than pedestrian collisions, which accounted for only 5%. These artificially engineered viruses possess full functional capabilities and are capable of replicating inside a laboratory setting. While AI has previously been utilized to develop novel antibiotics, engineering a viable and functional viral organism from the ground up represents a significantly more complex leap forward.

The underlying technology operates in a manner comparable to large language models such as ChatGPT, which forecast sequences of text. In this scientific breakthrough, the AI models—designated as Evo1 and Evo2—predict the language of life instead of human words. These artificial intelligence systems underwent rigorous training using genetic data extracted from viruses, bacteria, plants, and humans, before being refined to produce bacteriophages, a specific category of viruses designed solely to infect and destroy targeted bacterial strains.

Stock photo for illustration only, not from the actual event

Stanford University researchers selected the 302 most promising AI-generated designs and successfully synthesized them within laboratory conditions.
