The newly appointed chair of the Climate Change Committee, Nigel Topping, is currently undertaking a two-day fact-finding mission across Northern Ireland to gather perspectives from various sectors.
Throughout his visit, Topping is engaging directly with farmers, business community representatives, and political figures to evaluate the ongoing challenges and opportunities regarding environmental targets.
He noted that as a small nation, Northern Ireland possesses the unique advantage of being agile and innovative when tackling critical issues such as expanding renewable energy, enhancing waste management systems, and lowering emissions.
This visit underscores the ongoing pressure on devolved administrations across the UK to accelerate green policies, particularly given that Northern Ireland was the last region in the British Isles to adopt legally binding climate legislation.
Nevertheless, Topping issued a stark warning regarding the consequences of stagnation, stating that failure to act would result in forfeiting innovation opportunities to competitors, incurring higher energy costs, and harming children's health.
"If Northern Ireland doesn't do anything, it misses out on all the innovation opportunities, because other people take those. So that's like, dumb, dumb, dumb"
Nigel Topping
Describing the current climate dilemma as a race between obstinate tendencies and brilliant innovation, he argued that societies must choose to back their innovators to turn environmental challenges into genuine economic advantages.
Although Northern Ireland lagged behind other parts of the UK in establishing statutory emissions targets, Topping observed a palpable collective desire to catch up and ensure no community is left behind on the journey to net zero.
