California-based Otherlab has introduced Lightfoot, a two-seat electric cargo scooter that integrates a pair of solar panels directly into its clamshell body. Developed for short urban trips, the vehicle combines the accessibility of an electric scooter with storage capacity that reduces reliance on backpacks. Its elongated bench accommodates two riders, while the rectangular silhouette places solar generation at the core of the design.
Inspired by vehicles like the Vespa and Volkswagen bus, Lightfoot wraps its aircraft-grade aluminum frame with two 120-watt solar panels positioned along the sides. The integrated array can generate up to 18 miles or around 30 kilometers of range per day under favorable conditions, with the company estimating roughly three additional miles for every hour of quality sunlight.
Behind the solar bodywork sits a weather-resistant, lockable cargo compartment offering 45.2 liters of storage. Current specifications list a capacity of up to 20 kilograms for groceries, work equipment, or a helmet. Unlike many compact scooters, Lightfoot positions storage low and centrally to support balance at slower speeds.

The scooter pairs its solar capability with a lithium-ion battery delivering up to 37 miles or 60 kilometers of plug-in range. The onboard charging system reaches 80 percent in approximately 90 minutes. Regenerative braking recovers energy during deceleration, and a waterproof 2.8-inch touchscreen displays speed, battery level, and lighting status.
Integrating solar technology into micromobility vehicles represents an innovative approach to lessening reliance on traditional power grids for everyday short-distance travel. While small solar arrays cannot entirely replace wall socket charging, they offer a convenient supplementary power source that enhances energy independence for urban commuters.
Two brushless hub motors, one in each wheel, provide 750 watts of nominal power apiece, bringing Lightfoot to a top speed of 19.9 mph or 32 km/h. It features a twist-and-go throttle, hydraulic disc brakes, and motorcycle-style suspension, supporting the 62-kilogram vehicle across city streets. The solar cargo scooter is currently listed at $4,995 through the company's website.
