- Anthropic could spend over $750 billion on cloud contracts amid securing capacity from major tech giants.
- The company reported an $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of the year against $16.3 billion in revenue.
- Third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, representing a 45% increase from the previous quarter.
- Anthropic is reportedly targeting an initial public offering in November.
Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic is navigating increasingly complex cloud partnerships, according to a leaked S-1 filing obtained by The Wall Street Journal. The document reveals that the Claude maker is struggling to secure adequate cloud capacity from AWS, Google, and Microsoft, as these tech giants increasingly view Anthropic as a market competitor rather than just a customer.
This leaked filing expands on figures previously reported by Reuters and the Financial Times in late September, which indicated that Anthropic believes its total cloud spending could exceed $750 billion, including contracts still under negotiation. Despite these massive financial commitments, the company still faces supply shortages, prompting it to lease its own data centers and partner with third-party operators.
However, this strategy introduces new concerns. Anthropic has expressed worry that third-party data center operators possess a limited operating history, potentially making them less reliable than major hyperscalers. This enormous expenditure comes on the heels of an $80.7 billion net loss during the first half of the year, during which the firm generated $16.3 billion in revenue, with roughly one-fifth of those sales driven by just two customers.

The shift of major cloud providers viewing Anthropic as a competitor highlights the intensifying rivalry within the generative AI sector. Relying on foundational infrastructure owned by direct competitors introduces structural vulnerabilities, forcing leading AI startups to pursue independent infrastructure capabilities to maintain long-term business autonomy.
Building upon previously disclosed catastrophic risk warnings, the filing also cautions that Anthropic could face liability for damages caused by harmful AI behaviors, with potential liabilities exceeding available insurance coverage limits.

Despite these operational hurdles, the company informed prospective investors last week that third-quarter revenue alone has climbed to $16.8 billion, marking a 45% jump from the prior quarter. Reflecting this financial momentum, Anthropic is reportedly targeting an IPO in November. Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the reports.
