After introducing its Gemini AI assistant to Android Auto last year, Google is now bringing the technology to Apple CarPlay users. The conversational Gemini integration within navigation is available starting today for drivers located in the United States, with a broader rollout happening globally according to statements provided by Google.
It has taken nearly 12 months for Google to deliver this capability to CarPlay users, but drivers can now talk directly to the voice assistant inside Google Maps to receive hands-free assistance while operating their vehicles. This functionality includes the ability to process multi-step queries, such as asking for recommendations on places to visit and immediately prompting the system to provide directions while avoiding toll roads.

Users can easily activate this new feature by tapping the dedicated Gemini icon located within Google Maps on their vehicle's infotainment display. Google characterizes this CarPlay support update as a conversational method for reporting traffic disruptions and gathering information regarding stops and destinations on the go.
Expanding Gemini to Apple CarPlay highlights Google's cross-platform AI strategy, ensuring its advanced conversational assistant reaches iOS users who rely heavily on Google Maps for daily commuting despite platform competition.
However, the announcement did not mention any integration of the Personal Intelligence features that were revealed yesterday for Gemini in Android Auto and cars equipped with built-in Google systems. Those specific capabilities allow the voice assistant to access user information across various Google applications including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search. Media outlets have reached out to Google to clarify whether CarPlay users will eventually receive the personalization update as well.
