Manchester United endured one of the most embarrassing nights in their European history after being swept aside 4-1 by Como in the Champions League. The heavy defeat in Italy has piled severe pressure on head coach Michael Carrick, leaving his future at the club shrouded in immediate doubt.
Following the final whistle, Carrick marched straight across the pitch to apologize to the 700 travelling supporters, pointedly ignoring his beaten players. The gesture mirrored Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's actions after a 4-1 defeat at Watford in November 2021, which preceded his dismissal just 24 hours later.
Drawing parallels to past managerial dismissals highlights the ruthless nature of elite football management, where early-season collapses and tactical stagnation quickly erode the goodwill earned from previous successful campaigns.

However, club captain Bruno Fernandes compounded the mounting pressure by speaking to broadcasters after the game and pointing the finger squarely at the manager's tactics. Como's star performer Nico Paz opened the scoring inside two minutes, before orchestrating further misery for the visitors.
The latest setback means United have gone seven games without a victory, marking their worst winless sequence since an eight-match drought under Louis van Gas back in late 2015. Domestically, the team sits 13th in the Premier League table, only three points above the relegation zone, ahead of Sunday's fixture against 15th-placed Bournemouth.
"I always go over to the fans anyway, regardless, so it wasn't a particularly different kind of reason why I went over."
Michael Carrick
The scale of the embarrassment is stark when considering that when United last lifted the European Cup in 2008, Como were playing semi-professional football in Serie D in front of a couple of hundred spectators. Compounding their struggles, critics noted that the club's recruitment team failed to adequately strengthen key areas during the summer, leaving the squad thin in competition at left-back and in attack.
