- Perplexity and NVIDIA introduced JOLT for AI post-training
- A single model functions as both teacher and student
- Matched GRPO accuracy on the MATH benchmark
- Used 6.5x fewer processed training tokens
Researchers from Perplexity and NVIDIA have jointly introduced JOLT, an innovative post-training method designed to optimize reinforcement learning for large language models.
The core concept behind JOLT is training a single model to act simultaneously as both the teacher and the student, eliminating the need for separate teacher-student architectures traditionally used in reinforcement learning.

In benchmark evaluations on the MATH dataset, JOLT successfully matched the accuracy performance of GRPO while drastically reducing the required computational overhead.
A major breakthrough of this method is its efficiency, achieving comparable accuracy results while processing 6.5 times fewer training tokens than competing approaches.
The introduction of JOLT highlights the ongoing industry push toward cost-effective and resource-efficient AI training methodologies. By enabling a model to supervise its own learning process, researchers can streamline post-training pipelines and potentially set a new efficiency standard for future language models.
