  • Snapchat updates Spotlight recommendation systems to exclude fully AI-generated videos from rewards.
  • Creators can still utilize Snapchat AI creative tools to enhance or edit their content.
  • Major tech platforms are increasingly cracking down on low-quality AI content known as AI slop.
  • Snapchat recently implemented tighter content controls for teen users aged 13 to 15.

Snapchat has become the latest social network platform to strengthen its stance against low-quality AI content, commonly referred to as AI slop. The company announced it will no longer reward fully AI-generated videos, redirecting its focus toward content created by real people.

The update was officially announced on Friday, detailing adjustments to recommendation systems ensuring that only videos produced by actual individuals remain eligible for Spotlight recommendations.

"remain a place where people can discover authentic creativity from real people, because we believe there’s enduring value in rewarding original perspectives, personal storytelling, and the moments that people choose to create and share themselves."

Despite this shift, Snapchat clarified that it is not completely banning artificial intelligence. Creators are still permitted to use the platform's built-in AI creative tools to enhance or edit their original content.

This policy adjustment highlights the growing industry-wide challenge of maintaining authenticity and user trust amid an influx of automated content. By drawing a clear line between AI as an editing assistant versus fully automated generation, platforms are attempting to curb digital fatigue among users, mirroring recent policy changes across LinkedIn, Meta, and YouTube.

This update aligns with Snapchat’s broader initiatives to revitalize Spotlight and refocus attention on original human creativity. Back in April, the platform previously indicated that users would notice a decrease in AI-generated content on their feeds.

In separate platform updates last month, Snapchat rolled out new content control safeguards designed to protect underage users. Specifically, teenagers aged 13 to 15 are now restricted to sharing Spotlight posts only with mutual followers to prevent doxxing risks.
