Canva is diving deeper into the artificial intelligence space by launching its own image generation model designed to compete directly with offerings from major industry players like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. Announced on Thursday, the new model is called Canva Craft and brings advanced control to digital creation.
The defining feature of Canva Craft is its two-stage system architecture, which enables the model to plan out a design layout before actually generating the final image. According to the company, this workflow delivers greater precision, consistency, and control, making it especially effective for complex tasks that require legible text and exact object placement.
Canva Craft is capable of producing images at resolutions up to 2K across more than 30 aspect ratios. Beyond generating social media posts and marketing materials, the model is built to craft realistic scenes, digital artwork, environmental imagery, and more. Training data for the model included millions of human-made templates from Canva’s content library, ranging from presentations and infographics to restaurant menus.

Developing an in-house model allows Canva to tailor AI generation specifically to graphic design workflows rather than general-purpose art creation. The deliberate two-stage planning phase addresses persistent challenges in generative AI, such as rendering readable text and maintaining logical spatial relationships between graphic elements.
The model has already made a strong debut, currently ranking fourth on Design Arena, a crowdsourced benchmark leaderboard for AI design models, trailing just behind OpenAI’s GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare, and GPT-Image-2. Canva has also emphasized safety, noting that Craft comes equipped with robust input and output moderation, privacy controls, and reporting tools.
Looking ahead, Canva plans to allow external AI agents to integrate with Canva Craft using the open Model Context Protocol, alongside plans to release faster Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast variants. Canva Craft is rolling out globally and is available now to all users by navigating to the three-dot menu on the left-hand side of Canva and selecting Dream Lab.
