Etsy cracks down on AI slop with strict listing rules
Etsy introduces new AI policies requiring the first listing photo to be unedited and banning bot-generated listings to reduce misleading content.

- Etsy implements stricter AI rules to curb misleading AI-generated content on the platform.
- The first photo of every product listing must be an unedited picture of the actual item.
- Listings created by bots are banned, and functional guides must be human-created.
- AI-generated art remains permitted on the platform with mandatory disclosure.
Etsy has announced stricter regulations regarding the use of artificial intelligence in product listings to tackle the rising volume of low-quality AI content on its marketplace. According to the company, many active buyers have reported difficulties in identifying items that incorporate AI-generated content, while sellers have expressed concerns about having their original works displayed alongside listings that utilize AI in misleading ways.
Under the updated policies, every single product listing must include at least one unedited photo of the physical item against a real background, ensuring that all images accurately represent what the buyer will receive. While subsequent photos in a listing can be enhanced using software or AI tools, the final presentation must remain a faithful representation of the actual physical product. The company provided specific examples of prohibited misleading visuals, such as a cat stuffed animal highlighted in their announcement.

During the image upload process, if Etsy detects that any photo might be AI-generated, the platform will trigger a pop-up prompt allowing sellers to declare whether the image was created using AI. Furthermore, if a buyer reports that their delivered purchase is materially different from the online listing, the seller may be held responsible for issuing a refund.
Etsy's policy update highlights the ongoing struggle e-commerce platforms face as accessible generative AI tools flood online marketplaces with synthetic imagery. Requiring an authentic, unedited primary photo serves as a crucial trust mechanism, protecting consumers from misleading purchases while safeguarding authentic artisans and creators from being overshadowed by opaque AI-generated listings.
For sellers offering functional guides—including sewing patterns, recipes, or instructional materials—Etsy mandates that the information must be original work created by the seller rather than generated by AI, and creators must demonstrate an actual completed result produced from the guide. Additionally, the company confirmed that listings generated automatically by bots are no longer permitted on the platform.
Despite these tighter restrictions, selling AI-generated art continues to be allowed on Etsy, provided that sellers clearly disclose that the artwork was created using artificial intelligence technologies.
