- Anthropic's upcoming public listing is anticipated to reach a $2 trillion valuation.
- Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt's stake is valued at nearly $10 billion.
- Late-stage bets by Iconiq and Menlo Ventures have generated massive returns.
Anthropic's public market debut, anticipated later this year at a valuation reaching as high as $2 trillion, is set to generate massive financial windfalls for both early and late-stage investors. Even at the AI lab's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by venture capitalists and early backers already total billions of dollars, according to data from Bloomberg.
The incredible growth of the leading AI lab has caused the stakes held by key financial backers to skyrocket in value based on the pricing of their last funding round.
Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, invested in Anthropic's Series A round back in 2021 when the startup was valued at $461 million, based on PitchBook records. Today, Schmidt owns approximately 1% of the company, and even at the current private valuation, his equity stake is worth nearly $10 billion.

Meanwhile, investment outfit Iconiq wrote a massive $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company had already reached a $183 billion valuation. That enormous late-stage bet is currently valued at $17 billion and holds the potential to double its worth upon the company's IPO. Menlo Ventures led Anthropic's Series D and has invested over $1 billion into the firm over time, with that stake now sitting at $14 billion.

Prominent VC firm Sequoia backed the AI lab for the first time earlier this year when the startup was valued at $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured roughly a 1% ownership stake, meaning they have already more than doubled their initial outlay. Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, put $35 million into Anthropic's 2023 Series C round and later added another $400 million, resulting in a multi-billion dollar stake (though Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to establish a new venture firm).
The staggering valuations of Anthropic's equity holders highlight the unprecedented velocity of capital accumulation within the generative artificial intelligence sector. Unlike traditional software startups, modern AI labs are commanding historic private valuations and delivering exponential returns to institutional backers years before they even hit public exchanges, shifting the locus of major tech wealth creation further upstream into the venture capital lifecycle.
Spark Capital, notably the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, poured $75 million into that same 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That particular position has expanded more than ninetyfold to reach $7 billion.
