Local design practice Space is around us has completed a targeted renovation of a 100-square-meter residence located on Fokionos Negri street in the Kypseli neighborhood of Athens, Greece. The redesign focuses primarily on the kitchen and bathroom, drawing its material and color palette directly from an existing entryway floor mosaic depicting Bacchus, also known as Dionysus.
Within the kitchen, the studio installed a continuous fitted cabinetry unit along the main wall to maximize preparation surfaces and storage capacity. The cabinetry terminates in triangular open shelving designed to adapt to the irregular floor plan layout. Finished in a butter-yellow hue sampled straight from the entryway mosaic, the units are paired with Dionysus marble countertops, a material widely utilized in residential architecture across Athens during the 1960s.

Opposite the kitchen unit sits a custom terracotta dining table featuring rounded corners and oversized cylindrical legs, ensuring fluid spatial circulation throughout the area. The kitchen's former gray flooring was removed and replaced with large-format yellow terrazzo tiles that extend seamlessly through the hallway and into the windowless bathroom.
Inside the bathroom, glossy small-format lime-yellow and white tiles capture and reflect ambient light originating from an internal air shaft. A rounded vanity mirror alongside a terracotta wall sconce further reinforces the apartment's recurring geometric motifs and vintage aesthetic.
Integrating historical elements like the Bacchus floor mosaic into a modern residential renovation highlights a growing architectural trend of honoring mid-century heritage. By reusing period-specific materials such as Dionysus marble and matching custom color palettes, designers can preserve local Athenian architectural identity while upgrading spatial functionality for contemporary living.
