Chore Starter: Local AI prepares your tasks while you keep control
Discover Chore Starter, a local AI assistant built for Hacktoberfest 2026 that drafts emails and plans from plain text without automatic execution.

- Chore Starter is a minimal local AI assistant for everyday tasks you procrastinate on.
- It runs the Gemma 3 4B model locally via Ollama entirely on your machine.
- The AI prepares editable drafts and checklists but never executes actions automatically.
- Application code strictly separates preparation logic from permission handling.
Some tasks are not genuinely difficult; they are simply annoying to start. Asking for a refund, writing an awkward message, or tackling a disorganized desk makes opening a blank document feel like more effort than the task itself. This friction inspired a fresh open-source project within the developer community.
Built as a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3 (Slow and Steady), Chore Starter acts as a minimal personal assistant designed to help users get past the blank page. The application translates a plain-language prompt into an editable email, message, or practical plan, complete with a short checklist and placeholders for missing details without inventing fake order numbers.

The core philosophy of the tool is simple: preparation is not permission. Although the AI prepares everything, copying, downloading, or opening an email draft requires explicit separate preview and confirmation. It never sends emails, makes purchases, submits forms, or schedules events on its own. The interface remains deliberately compact, housing a single task box, a prepared result, and clear next steps stored locally on your machine.
Under the hood, the tech stack leverages React, Vite, TypeScript, Hono, and Gemma 3 4B through Ollama. The architecture intentionally separates two distinct components: preparation, where the model structures the request without any tool access or account credentials, and permission, where ordinary application code controls the subsequent steps to ensure the model cannot approve its own output.
"It does not eliminate your judgment. It eliminates some of the preparation that makes small chores feel bigger than they are."

For every action, the server creates a short-lived confirmation tied strictly to the current state. Editing the draft invalidates previous approvals, cancellations prevent reuse, and single confirmations cannot be replayed. Enforcing these boundaries at the server level rather than relying on interface prompts ensures privacy, keeping sensitive refund requests or personal notes away from hosted AI APIs.
This project highlights the growing viability of local-first AI applications in software development. Utilizing a smaller 4B model proves entirely practical for scoped tasks like text drafting, eliminating privacy concerns while maintaining rigorous permission guardrails through inspectable open-source code.
Developers and tech enthusiasts can explore further discussions, open-source codebases, and career growth resources within the global developer community platform.
