Cesar, a senior software engineer with over a decade of industry experience, has shared his personal journey of resilience following a challenging period in his life when he fell ill and suffered from severe burnout in 2023, followed by a layoff in 2024 that tested his professional limits.
To pull himself out of the slump, Cesar turned back to writing by resurrecting his personal blog and Dev.to account. He described the writing process as free therapy that provided him with a concrete reason to get out of bed every morning and slowly regain his footing.
After publishing hundreds of posts, he challenged himself to write a book. This led to the creation of Street-Smart Coding, a roadmap featuring 30 essential lessons he wished he had known when first starting out in the tech industry

Street-Smart Coding has since expanded to become book number two in a planned four-part series. He has already authored a prequel titled Street-Smart Manifesto, is currently working on a sequel called Street-Smart Coding in the Age of AI, and has another book lined up to share hard-earned knowledge.
"I don't have all answers, tho."

Burnout is a pervasive issue among software developers and tech professionals, frequently triggered by high-pressure environments and tight delivery deadlines. Cesar's approach of using writing therapy mirrors established psychological methods where creating micro-wins and sharing expertise helps rebuild cognitive focus and professional identity after facing career shocks such as layoffs.
Last July, Cesar hosted an AMA session to celebrate his 7-year anniversary on Dev.to, which generated 105 comments. This week, to mark the first anniversary of Street-Smart Coding, he is hosting another AMA to answer questions regarding coding, burnout recovery, and writing.
Cesar also emphasized his desire to keep the conversation strictly human rather than interacting with an LLM. Readers who participated in his previous AMA or simply want to drop by and say hello are encouraged to join the discussion in the comments section.
