Amid ongoing gambling scandals that have shaken professional basketball, the NBA has introduced a brand-new integrity framework alongside official prediction market partnerships with major platforms. This move has drawn significant attention from sports fans and industry analysts alike.
According to a report by The Verge, the NBA announced on Monday that it has secured "preferred" prediction market deals with Kalshi and Polymarket, alongside a memorandum of understanding with the US CFTC regarding relationship management. Furthermore, the league expanded its existing partnership with DraftKings to incorporate prediction markets, teasing that further expansions with other entities will be announced soon.

This fresh push into gambling partnerships comes while the NBA is already grappling with serious integrity scandals. Jontay Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges over a gambling and manipulation scheme in 2024, while Malik Beasley has reportedly been in plea negotiations over similar charges. Additionally, former player Terry Rozier and former coach Chauncey Billups face indictments for allegedly rigging prop bets and participating in rigged poker games, respectively.

Under these new arrangements, prediction markets gain access to official league data and intellectual property in exchange for promised limitations on "permissible markets" and information-sharing protocols regarding suspicious trades and investigations.
The integration of prediction markets into major sports leagues highlights the rapid mainstream expansion of speculative betting platforms. While these platforms have gained traction for forecasting real-world events, they face mounting regulatory scrutiny and legal battles, such as New York Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuits against Kalshi and concerns over algorithmic targeting of vulnerable gamblers.
