- Approximately 200 passengers were ordered to disembark and await temporary living arrangements.
- The multi-year voyage was originally planned to span 3.5 years across nearly 150 countries.
A luxury cruise ship embarking on a multi-year journey around the globe has abruptly suspended its operations, leaving passengers stranded in Cambodia amid skyrocketing global fuel prices. The US-based operator of the vessel stated it was actively collaborating with travelers to coordinate disembarkation plans and temporary accommodation arrangements.
The nearly 200-meter or 656-foot vessel has a maximum capacity of up to 650 passengers and originally departed Belfast in October 2024 to begin a continuous around-the-world voyage. However, global fuel prices have surged dramatically following the outbreak of the Iran war earlier this year.
The cruise operator reported that the monthly fuel cost per cabin in certain parts of Asia has spiked from $1,800 or £6,000 up to as high as $8,000. Passing this full cost increase directly onto the residents on board was deemed an unfeasible solution for the company.
"Passing the full increase on to residents is not a realistic solution."

According to its official website, the Villa Vie Odyssey's grand itinerary was designed to span 3.5 years and visit nearly 150 countries. The departure had previously faced substantial delays due to ship repairs, which left passengers stuck in Belfast for months and cost the enterprise millions of pounds.
This sudden suspension highlights the inherent economic vulnerabilities of long-term residential cruise models when confronted with sudden geopolitical shocks and volatile energy markets. When operating expenses like marine fuel multiply rapidly, fixed-fee lifetime or monthly residence structures face severe financial strain that can disrupt operations overnight.
The ship had logged over 750 days of its circumnavigation before announcing the suspension on Tuesday, resulting in passengers being stranded in Cambodia. Bloomberg reported, citing the cruise operator's founder, that roughly 200 passengers were on board when the disembarkation order was issued.
The Villa Vie Odyssey features multiple dining venues, bars, a pool deck, and a pickleball court. Permanent cabin residencies are priced between $120,000 and $440,000, with rental options starting at $3,500 per month, following the launch of a lifetime retirement-at-sea program last year.
