Airbnb is stepping up its philanthropic efforts by introducing a permanent funding model for its nonprofit arm. Starting Wednesday, the company will allocate 10 cents from every homestay booking directly to Airbnb.org, an organization established to house individuals displaced by natural disasters, conflicts, and other crises. This flat contribution applies uniformly across every market regardless of the nightly room rate, though hotel bookings, experiences, and service reservations are excluded from the initiative.
According to Christoph Gorder, executive director of Airbnb.org, the organization aims to secure $500 million over a five-year period. The bulk of this funding will come from Airbnb itself, which also finances the nonprofit's operational expenses, alongside contributions from foundations, individual donors, and platform hosts.
The ultimate goal is to achieve 1 million free nights provided annually by the fifth year. This scale represents roughly a tenfold increase compared to the approximately 100,000 nights Airbnb.org is on track to deliver this year. Gorder noted that reaching this milestone will require deeper partnerships with governments, healthcare facilities, and emergency management nonprofits.

Alongside its core disaster response efforts—which addressed 18 disasters in 2024 and are projected to reach about 250 events this year—Airbnb.org is broadening its scope into new support categories:
- A dedicated program for families traveling domestically in Mexico for medical care, which launched in October 2025 and now operates across 16 countries.
- A domestic violence pilot initiative named Safe Havens, scheduled to launch in Utah within the upcoming months.
Airbnb's strategy of embedding a micro-donation into every routine transaction represents a shift toward sustainable, predictable funding for corporate philanthropy. By shifting away from purely voluntary donations, the nonprofit secures a steady financial pipeline. However, scaling operational logistics to match 1 million free nights globally will test the organization's ability to coordinate rapidly with local governments and relief agencies during unpredictable crises.
