Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow has disclosed the outcomes of his discussions with the Foreign Minister of Malaysia, highlighting trade, investment, regional development, and the ongoing insurgency in Thailand's southernmost provinces.
Malaysia, acting as the facilitator for the peace dialogue process, has appointed a new facilitator who previously served as the Director of Military Intelligence of Malaysia. Mr. Sihasak expressed confidence that this appointment will foster smooth and effective collaboration with the Thai side.
Mr. Sihasak reiterated a crucial standpoint: while Malaysia serves as the facilitator, Thailand remains the owner of the dialogue process. Negotiations with the BRN movement are vital as they are believed to be behind various incidents, alongside addressing other issues with all sectors, particularly local civilians regarding identity, livelihoods, and education.

Offering perspective from experienced regional figures, Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, leader of the Prachachat Party and former Secretary-General of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC), previously noted that strategic frameworks mandate a conflict resolution and a peaceful environment in the deep south by the year 2027, serving as a social contract.
The appointment of a former intelligence figure as Malaysia's new facilitator reflects an effort to tighten coordination channels. Nevertheless, the true challenge lies beyond administrative facilitation, resting heavily on building genuine local trust and community participation as highlighted by regional stakeholders.
Pol. Col. Thawee further emphasized that pouring in more budget or military equipment does not constitute a sustainable peacebuilding method. The indispensable solution requires open-minded dialogue and empowering locals to determine their own future under the constitution.
