- Readwise Books enters beta to challenge Kindle and Kobo in the ebook market.
- Features Strava-like reading metrics to track speed and duration, shareable with friends.
- Aims to overthrow Goodreads with a cleaner interface and social reading features.
- Secured agreements with all five major US publishers after over nine years of talks.
Over the past several years, Readwise has built tools tailored for power readers, including its flagship highlighting tool, Readwise Reader for saving articles and PDFs, and now Readwise Books—a comprehensive platform for purchasing, reading, and discussing literature currently available in beta through invites or for existing subscribers.
Co-founders Tristan Homsi and Daniel Doyon describe the platform as Strava for reading because it tracks reading duration, volume, and pace, displaying these metrics to connections within the app. The homepage features a continuous activity feed of peers' reading habits interwoven with recommendations and comments.
"Literally, Dan and I talked about this when we first met. We feel like Kindle could be so much better. We really didn’t take nine-plus years to be able to get to this point."

The concept behind Readwise Books dates back to the founders' initial meeting. While realizing nobody actively demands a redesigned Kindle, they identified a universal sentiment that everyone dislikes Goodreads. Consequently, the strategy involves taking on Kindle by first replacing Goodreads, offering tracking tools that even sync with Kindle accounts via snapshot verification of starting and ending pages.

Readwise's entry into the ebook storefront space highlights how targeted software features can disrupt entrenched ecosystems. By addressing specific user frustrations with legacy platforms like Goodreads and introducing engaging gamification elements, Readwise carves out a unique value proposition without immediately needing to manufacture proprietary hardware.
The ultimate objective is shifting book purchases directly to Readwise. Achieving this required navigating complex negotiations, security audits, and DRM debates with all five major US publishers. Despite the exhausting multi-year process, securing these deals instantly places Readwise on a competitive footing regarding pricing and catalog availability.
Doyon and Homsi believe their timing aligns well with current market trends, as digital reading continues to expand among younger demographics on mobile devices. Furthermore, the proliferation of Android-compatible E Ink hardware like the Boox Palma series means Readwise can bypass building dedicated physical e-readers.
