- Thailand Ministry of Justice clarifies progress on the 2026 Social Harmony Act.
- Amnesty and record-clearing apply to all political factions including youth protesters.
- Officials stress strict equality and standardized legal enforcement for all citizens.
On October 29, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the Ministry of Justice, Permanent Secretary Piyasiri Watanavrangkul, serving as chairman of the sub-committee for screening under the Social Harmony Act B.E. 2569, addressed the public regarding political amnesty procedures. The statement followed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's petition submitted to Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapan, who heads the Social Harmony Committee, requesting a clearance of his political case records.
Piyasiri explained that the assessment framework prioritizes clear and direct criteria, ensuring that straightforward matters are expedited. He emphasized that cases involving misunderstandings or instances where individuals faced unfair treatment would not be discarded. Instead, all relevant information will be integrated into a comprehensive review process by the screening sub-committee.
Political amnesty and national reconciliation frameworks remain highly contentious in Thailand as they seek to address deep-rooted historical conflicts. By publicly outlining an inclusive evaluation scope that encompasses both ordinary youth protesters and high-ranking political figures, the Ministry aims to reinforce public confidence in the rule of law and counter perceptions of selective justice.
The sub-committee reiterated its commitment to examining every single submission thoroughly, asserting that the legal standards and benefits derived from the legislation will apply equally to everyone, regardless of whether the petitioner is a youth, a current minister, or a former leader.
