The Thai government aims to utilize the Udon Thani Horticultural Expo 2026 as a key driver for the northeastern regional economy while elevating Thailand's stature on the international stage. The grand event is scheduled to take place over 134 days, starting from November 1, 2026, until March 14, 2027. The venue is set at the Nong Da wetland in Kut Sa sub-district, Mueang Udon Thani district, covering a vast area of 1,030 rai under the core theme focusing on biodiversity, connecting people, water resources, and plants toward sustainable living.
The exhibition grounds will feature more than 50 distinct garden displays alongside cutting-edge agricultural innovations designed to attract both domestic and international travelers. Government projections estimate that the event will draw approximately 3.6 million visitors throughout its operational period, significantly stimulating local commerce and generating an estimated economic impact exceeding 20 billion baht.

Beyond the substantial financial injection, the horticultural expo is projected to create more than 81,000 job positions and yield over 7.7 billion baht in tax revenue. The primary objectives include boosting tourism, distributing income to local businesses in Udon Thani and surrounding provinces, and repurposing the venue into a permanent learning center and tourist attraction after the conclusion of the main event.
Hosting international horticultural expositions requires substantial state investment, making long-term strategic planning essential. The critical challenge lies in balancing immediate economic stimuli with sustainable post-event infrastructure management, ensuring that converted facilities do not become financial burdens while genuinely benefiting the local community over time.
Nevertheless, amidst high economic expectations, various sectors have voiced concerns and urged the government to provide transparent clarifications on key issues. Particular scrutiny surrounds the public relations budget, which totals 338 million baht alongside proposals for an additional 200 million baht. Although state agencies explained that these figures follow recommendations from the International Association of Horticultural Producers, critics maintain that detailed procurement records must be publicly accessible to verify value for money, alongside annual maintenance costs after the event.
