Amazon's streaming service, Prime Video, has evolved into a powerhouse business. During the quarterly earnings call on Thursday, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that the platform's revenue run rate has reached the tens of billions of dollars and is now profitable on its own. This financial momentum has been strongly supported by Amazon MGM Studios, which has brought in more than $1.2 billion in global box office sales so far this year. Hit titles like Project Hail Mary and Verity drove these figures. Specifically, Project Hail Mary grossed an estimated $684 million worldwide according to The Numbers. Starring Ryan Gosling and based on Andy Weir's novel, the film debuted in theaters in March to become Amazon MGM Studios' highest-grossing release, despite the studio also facing a notable flop this year with Melania.
Jassy also highlighted several successful television series, including Carrie, The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Boys, Off Campus, Fallout, and Reacher. According to the company, Season 4 of Reacher attracted 66 million viewers globally within its first 28 days. Production for Season 5 is currently underway, and the series has already been renewed for a sixth season.

Live sports have additionally served as a major catalyst for the streaming service. Prime Video broadcasts events such as NASCAR, the Masters, and UEFA Champions League soccer, but Thursday Night Football has proven to be its standout success this year. Nielsen figures shared by Amazon show that the first six games of the season averaged 17.7 million viewers, marking a 16% increase from last year. Furthermore, the streaming platform attracted over 2 million viewers for the second season of NBA on Prime, according to Nielsen.
Amazon's success in turning Prime Video from a mere customer perk into a self-sustaining, multi-billion-dollar entertainment engine demonstrates the immense value of heavy investments in exclusive live sports and premium theatrical releases. This multi-pronged approach not only drives subscriber retention but also strengthens Amazon's broader digital advertising and commerce ecosystem.
