Rescue operations are currently underway in northern India following the crash of a helicopter carrying a total of six individuals, including five pilgrims, according to officials in the country.
Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, stated that the aircraft went down near a village close to Joshimath within the Chamoli district. Dispatch teams have been sent directly into the mountainous terrain, although the physical condition of those on board remains uncertain.
Reports indicate that the helicopter took off from the Hindu pilgrimage site of Badrinath on Friday afternoon before losing all communication. The exact root cause of the crash remains undetermined thus far, occurring amidst reports of heavy rainfall and poor visibility conditions across the area.
Uttarakhand is a Himalayan state sharing borders with both China and Nepal, serving as the home for some of Hinduism's most revered shrines and drawing millions of devoted pilgrims annually. While helicopter services have gained immense popularity among travelers seeking to bypass arduous mountain treks, safety concerns have grown significantly following a sequence of previous aviation accidents along these vital pilgrimage routes.
Badrinath stands as one of four sacred locations situated along the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, alongside Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. Pilgrims frequently navigate steep Himalayan valleys to access these temples, which remain accessible for only limited months each year due to severe winter conditions.

Friday's incident unfolded against the backdrop of heavy regional rainfall, with India's meteorological department having issued an orange weather alert warning of thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds. Chief Minister Dhami confirmed that a joint rescue mission involving local administration, disaster management, and the State Disaster Response Force was actively operating.

Dhami further noted that instructions had been issued to airlift anyone who sustained serious injuries for urgent medical treatment. Aviation authorities previously tightened safety checks and restricted specific operations following a fatal crash in June 2025 near Kedarnath that killed seven people, following another fatal accident on the same route in October 2022.
