2s.design Introduces Equihero Anatomical Inhalation Masks for Horses

Warsaw-based industrial design studio 2s.design has introduced Equihero, a series of anatomical inhalation masks engineered to address the physiological and behavioral needs of horses undergoing respiratory treatments. Rooted in 'More-Than-Human Design' principles, the project shifts the focus away from human-centric usability and toward animal comfort, blending digital modeling, veterinary research, and iterative prototyping to foster a less stressful nebulization process.

The project came to life following a practical challenge faced by the studio's founders while treating their own horse for a respiratory illness. Existing options on the market were either costly veterinary systems or unsuitable alternatives that caused distress for the animal. Equihero was designed to bridge this gap, exploring ways in which veterinary equipment could better accommodate the unique anatomy and behavior of horses.

The design by 2s.design addresses two distinct users simultaneously: the horse, characterized as a sensitive and easily startled patient, and the caretaker, who relies on an efficient and dependable treatment system. To comprehend the complex geometry of an equine head, the team initiated the process with a digital horse phantom, allowing them to analyze anatomical relationships and formulate four distinct design approaches.

Following the digital phase, the studio partnered with a veterinarian to test their concepts directly within stable environments. Initial 3D printed prototypes were evaluated on live horses to check proportions and fit, which was then followed by transparent resin prototypes enabling direct observation of breathing patterns inside the mask. This method allowed the designers to evaluate seal pressure, nostril movement, and general comfort during inhalation sessions.

The finalized design integrates multiple micro-ergonomic refinements derived from rigorous testing. Straps were carefully positioned to prevent pressure on the delicate occipital region, while emergency magnetic clips were built in for rapid release during sudden movements. Equihero successfully fuses medical functionality with an equestrian-friendly aesthetic, featuring a streamlined silhouette with embossed side details for structural definition, complemented by natural color palettes including sand, peat, clay, and charcoal.
