The artificial intelligence sector is navigating new financial frontiers as chip giant Nvidia considers stepping in as a debt cosigner. According to reports from The Information corroborated by Bloomberg, Nvidia is in talks to guarantee billions of dollars in financing for AI cloud provider Nscale's upcoming Anthropic data center project located in West Virginia.
This proposed arrangement aims to help Nscale secure capital for electricity and construction expenses at its West Virginia campus. Under a residual value guarantee framework, Nvidia would intervene if Nscale defaults on construction payments, temporarily manage the facility, and assist in identifying a buyer and new tenant for the property.
Historically, Nvidia’s backing of cloud infrastructure providers has primarily centered around leases and chip purchases rather than direct construction financing. This potential shift highlights the intense measures AI industry players are taking to keep massive infrastructure buildout plans on track as investors grow increasingly nervous about soaring capital expenditures.

The stakes remain exceptionally high for Nscale as it targets a public market debut with a valuation of up to $35 billion, despite ongoing skepticism regarding its execution capabilities. The company has previously faced operational hurdles, including construction runoff issues that repeatedly flooded nearby residential areas, before eventually securing state certification in September following months of negotiations.
"In essence, the chipmaker would be co-signing a customer’s loans, a sign of how hard the AI industry is working to keep its buildout plans afloat as investors grow jittery about the amounts of money involved."
The Information
When the dominant hardware supplier in an ecosystem begins financial engineering to guarantee customer debt, it signals a systemic bottleneck in infrastructure scaling. While such guarantees temporarily bridge the gap between ambitious AI demand and slow physical construction, they concentrate financial risk back onto the primary hardware vendor, introducing unique vulnerabilities if market expansion cools down.
Meanwhile, broader market pressures are mounting for neocloud providers lacking rich cash reserves. Shares across firms like CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN experienced declines exceeding 30% during October. Simultaneously, Anthropic faces credit rating scrutiny following its IPO filing, with Blackstone warning of a potential below-investment-grade rating that could inflate borrowing costs and deepen reliance on financially robust partners.
