- Thailand tightens border security following stray gunfire from Myanmar
- Import-export waivers suspended in Mae Sot and Phop Phra districts, Tak
- The 7-day measure runs from October 30 to November 5, 2026
- Authorities confirm border checkpoints are not completely closed
On November 2, 2026, Ms. Lalida Periswivatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the government places the highest priority on the safety and property of citizens along the Thai-Myanmar border. Security agencies in the area have stepped up control over cross-border trade channels in Mae Sot and Phop Phra districts, Tak province, after fighting in Myanmar resulted in stray bullets crossing into Thai territory and damaging residential properties.
The Naresuan Task Force and local security units notified the Mae Sot Customs House to request the suspension of import-export waivers through channels other than officially approved ones. This applies to areas south of the 1st Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Mae Sot district, as well as Phop Phra district in Tak province, for a period of 7 days from October 30 to November 5, 2026, or until the situation eases. The move aims to manage the border situation, prevent the transport of supplies that could support various armed factions in Myanmar, and reduce safety risks for local residents.

Officials emphasized that this measure only suspends waivers for specific channels and areas outlined in the announcement. It does not mean a complete closure of the border checkpoints or a total halt to trade between Thailand and Myanmar, as imports and exports through official approved channels must still comply with relevant laws, regulations, and conditions.
"The government places the highest priority on the safety and property of citizens along the Thai-Myanmar border."
Ms. Lalida Periswivatana
This targeted tightening of border controls reflects the delicate security balancing act the Thai government must maintain amid ongoing conflicts across the border. By focusing restrictions on temporary waiver channels rather than a blanket closure, authorities can mitigate immediate risks to civilians in Tak province while keeping official and regulated trade corridors open.
