Meta has officially announced the timeline for ending software support for its popular Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro virtual reality headsets. The company stated that it plans to release the final operating system update, designated as version v213, by March 2027, after which the devices will no longer receive new feature updates.
Despite phasing out major OS updates, Meta confirmed that it will maintain ongoing security support by delivering security patches and critical bug fixes for Quest 2 and Quest Pro users through the end of 2027. Additionally, software developers will still be permitted to submit new applications supporting both headset models to the platform until December 2027.
The decision to sunset software support for the Quest 2 and Pro highlights the natural hardware lifecycle in the VR industry as Meta shifts its user base toward higher-performance devices. Setting a firm deadline in 2027 allows developers and consumers to align their strategies with the company's newer hardware ecosystem, particularly as newer models like the Quest 3 and 3S take over as the core foundation.

Regarding hardware succession, Meta has designated the Quest 3 and Quest 3S as the new baseline for its VR gamers. The company emphasized that these newer models offer greater performance headroom and built-in mixed reality. Furthermore, applications built for these devices will carry forward to Meta's upcoming VR Glasses slated for a spring 2027 release, as they operate on the same OS and SDKs.
